Free SEO Audit Checklist

This SEO audit checklist is the order we work through when we inherit a website: crawling and indexing first, then speed, redirects and duplicates, then on-page elements, content, links and local presence. Each item says what to check and where.

What’s inside

  • 80+ checks across technical, on-page, content and off-page SEO
  • Priority and effort scoring for every issue
  • Core Web Vitals and schema validation steps
  • A one-page summary to share with leadership
How to use it

Three steps to value

Make a copy

Open it in Google Sheets or download for Excel.

Fill in the yellow cells

Instructions sit beside every section; the example row shows the standard.

Review monthly

Use the summary tab in your team meeting and act on what it shows.

Why use a SEO audit checklist

The checklist is grouped into sections with each check marked by severity. Indexing checks cover robots.txt, sitemaps, noindex tags, canonical tags and Search Console coverage. Technical checks cover loading and responsiveness metrics, mobile rendering, redirect chains, broken links, duplicate URLs and parameter handling. On-page checks cover titles, descriptions, headings, internal linking and structured data. Content checks look for thin, duplicate or outdated pages and cannibalisation. Authority and local checks cover backlinks and Google Business Profiles.

Work top to bottom, because an indexing problem makes everything below it irrelevant. Record findings with the affected URLs, then prioritise by impact and effort rather than fixing everything at once.

Useful before a migration, after a traffic drop or when taking over a site.

How often should I run an SEO audit?
A full audit once or twice a year, plus quick checks after any site change, migration or traffic drop. Search Console alerts and monthly crawls catch many problems between full audits.
What tools do I need for an SEO audit?
Google Search Console and PageSpeed Insights are free and essential. A crawler such as Screaming Frog helps with larger sites. A paid SEO suite adds backlink and competitor data but is not required to start.
