Free Keyword Research Template

A long export of search terms becomes a usable plan with this keyword research template, which groups keywords by intent and topic and maps each to one page. Priority comes from business value as well as search volume.

Why use a keyword research template

The template has columns for keyword, monthly volume, difficulty, intent (informational, commercial, transactional, navigational), topic cluster, target URL, current ranking and a business value score you set yourself. A cluster tab rolls keywords up into page-level topics so you do not create several thin pages competing for the same search.

Start with seed terms from customers and sales, expand them with a keyword tool and Search Console, then remove anything irrelevant. Group before prioritising. The most common mistake is chasing high-volume informational terms while ignoring lower-volume commercial terms that bring buyers. Mapping each cluster to one URL also reveals cannibalisation on existing sites.

It feeds directly into the content calendar template.

How do I choose which keywords to target first?
Prioritise terms with clear commercial intent and realistic difficulty for your site, even if volume is modest. Then add informational topics that support those pages. Business value matters more than raw search volume.
What is keyword cannibalisation?
It is when several pages on your site target the same search, so Google struggles to choose one and none ranks well. Mapping each keyword cluster to a single URL in this template helps prevent and spot it.
