Analytics Glossary: Key Terms Explained
GA4 reports, attribution debates and dashboard meetings share a vocabulary, and this analytics glossary defines it. Each entry gives a plain meaning and a note on how the term is commonly misread.
About this analytics glossary
Entries are grouped loosely into measurement basics (users, sessions, events, conversions, engagement rate), attribution (last click, data-driven, conversion window, view-through), tracking setup (tags, data layer, consent mode, server-side tracking, UTM parameters) and reporting (dimensions, metrics, sampling, cohorts). Each definition is a few sentences, with a note where GA4 behaves differently from the older Universal Analytics many people still remember.
The most useful entries are often the misread ones. Engagement rate is not the inverse of the old bounce rate in every case, and a conversion in Google Ads is not necessarily the same event as a conversion in GA4. Use the glossary when reviewing reports so meetings argue about decisions, not definitions.
